We’ve been shortlisted!

We're belatedly sharing some exciting news: Studio Materi has been shortlisted for the BIID Interior Design Awards 2026, in the International – Residential category, for our project Faisan in Berlin.

Faisan brought together two apartments within a new-build residential building in Charlottenburg, creating one generous 293 sqm home. It looked straightforward on paper, but it was actually one of our more technically challenging projects to date. The developer's original layout included a classic "Berliner Zimmer" — a large anteroom beyond the entrance hall that other rooms opened off, typical of Berlin's residential architecture. We reworked the entire layout to move away from that arrangement and let light travel through the whole apartment instead.

That reworking gave us the chance to design the interior architecture from the ground up rather than simply decorate around it. We specified beautiful flooring with a tactile grain for its biophilic qualities, designed bespoke internal glass doors to our own spec, brought in tactile natural stone surfaces throughout, and layered in statement lighting to anchor each space. We also worked closely with the client to source new artwork and vintage pieces, creating an inspiring family home built for both comfortable living and entertaining in style.

This is our second consecutive year on the shortlist, having been recognised last year for our Oliphant St project. It's always a privilege to be shortlisted alongside so many brilliant designers, and we can't wait to celebrate with them all in October.

Huge thanks to the British Institute of Interior Design for the recognition, and to everyone who worked on Faisan with us — including photographer James French, whose images capture the apartment's calm, considered atmosphere beautifully.

You can see the full shortlist on the BIID Awards website, with winners announced at the ceremony in October.
